Mature Rocky Mountain Juniper Tree
Rocky Mountain Juniper juniperus scopulorum is a coniferous evergreen.
A small to medium tree, typically with a dense pyramidal crown. Native to western North Dakota. Seedling plantings may exhibit a wide variety of forms. Many denser growing cultivars are used as ornamentals. The largest tree in North Dakota has a trunk circumference of 7 1⁄2 feet. Rocky Mountain juniper is susceptible to cedar apple rust however it rarely causes damage to the juniper. Avoid planting near apples, crabapples, or pear trees as the disease commonly damages these fruit trees.
Rocky Mountain Junipers prefer moist, well drained soils, though very drought tolerant once established.
Rocky Mountain Juniper will tolerate a wide range of soils with pH 5.0-8.5.
Cold Hardiness Zones 3-9
