Images of Ponderosa Pine

Ponderosa Pine pinus ponderosa is a coniferous evergreen.  A large tree native to southwestern North Dakota that is pyramidal when young, becoming irregularly oblong and open-crowned with age. Ponderosa Pine will lose a portion of needles every fall in preparation for winter.  The oldest needles (3-year-old growth) will turn brown in fall and drop sometime between then and the end of winter.  Excellent choice for wildlife plantings.  Being native to ND it will attract a variety of wildlife, as well as the tall slender, somewhat open trunks making a great place for a tree stand.  The largest tree in North Dakota is 73 feet tall with a canopy spread of 26 feet. 

Ponderosa Pine prefer moist, well drained soils, but have some drought tolerance

Ponderosa Pine will perform best with slightly acidic soils but does tolerate some alkalinity and salinity with tolerance of pH 6.0-8.0.
